Sustainable asphalt
1,696,579 plastic bags, 316,029 glass bottles and 38,682 waste toner cartridges are being used to resurface roads at multiple sites in the Woollahra Municipality through a trial of innovative new product Reconophalt.
The mix of recycled plastic, glass and reclaimed asphalt substantially reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfill, while providing a road surface that’s stronger and longer-lasting than traditional asphalt.
The use of Reconophalt across our municipality is a fantastic way of ensuring waste that would otherwise end up in landfill is reused – a far better outcome for the environment and a great example of how infrastructure can be built sustainably.
Here is an outline of where we are trialling the use of Reconophalt in the Woollahra local government area from late 2019 through to 2020:
