Rose Bay Cycleway opens, improving safety on New South Head Road

A new 2.4km cycleway will improve safety along New South Head Road in Rose Bay, ensuring the iconic Rose Bay Promenade is accessible for all to enjoy.
Located between William Street, Double Bay and Norwich Road, Rose Bay, the Rose Bay Cycleway provides a safe solution for cyclists and pedestrians using this busy thoroughfare and enhances transport options along the area’s only direct connection to the city.
The Cycleway incorporates separate spaces for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles along the iconic Rose Bay Promenade, through a design that balances the needs of all road users, having incorporated extensive community feedback and concerns around safety.
Features of the new cycleway
Delivered by Woollahra Council with funding assistance from the NSW Government, the Cycleway’s features include:
- A shared path along the harbour-side footpath on New South Head Road between William Street, Double Bay and Boat House Restaurant/Rose Bay Marina
- Separated bi-directional cycleway and pedestrian path along the Rose Bay Promenade
- Shared path along the harbour-side footpath of New South Head Road, adjacent to Lyne Park
- Shared path on the southern side of New South Head Road between Kent Road and Norwich Road, Rose Bay.
New South Head Road in Rose Bay had long been identified as a missing link in Sydney’s growing cycling network, due to its direct city connection but previous lack of an option for cyclists to be separated from traffic.
Following several cyclist fatalities and near misses along the route, Woollahra Council resolved to improve road safety, delivering a solution to avoid further accidents while also encouraging more people to take up cycling.
"Safe and accessible" for all
“The route is such an important one for our community and includes one of the most iconic locations in Sydney. We want to ensure it is safe and accessible for everyone to enjoy,” Woollahra Mayor Susan Wynne said.
“The Rose Bay Cycleway will vastly improve safety for cyclists on what has until now been a dangerous route, and also meets the needs of our diverse community by ensuring pedestrians and parents with prams are also safely accommodated.
“Many more people began cycling during the pandemic and we would like to ensure this uptake continues. If people want to utilise a greener, more active form of transport on their commute, we want them to be able to safely access that option and link up to other forms of transport, such as ferries to the CBD as part of their journey.”

Member for Vaucluse Gabrielle Upton said, “This cycleway, funded with $1.78 million from the NSW Government, will not only make this major section of New South Head Road safer for cyclists, it will also ease congestion on our roads.
“What was once a busy and dangerous route for cyclists, is now a safer and scenic connection across Rose Bay.
“I fought hard to ensure this important cycleway was delivered as another valuable link in the Eastern Suburbs and by working with Woollahra Council, it is now open for everyone to enjoy.”
