Waterfront Action Group and other concerned groups have lodged an online petition with the NSW Legislative Assembly asking for the State Government to take action to address pollution caused by decaying vessels and orphaned infrastructure in Sydney Harbour.

On 12 August 2024, Woollahra Council resolved to support this e-petition, which closes on 26 December 2024. You are invited to demonstrate your support.

Sydney Harbour belongs to us all, it’s an international icon. The e-petition is calling for clear and immediate action by the State Government of NSW to stop the junk; to remove redundant, derelict vessels and failing structures which pollute and degrade the environment and amenity of our Harbour.

This petition is an opportunity to express the will of the community to protect and allow the Harbour environment to repair. This will be achieved by forcing the Government to stop the junk, to remove redundant, derelict vessels and failing structures which pollute and degrade the environment and reduce the amenity of the Harbour.

The petition is calling on the Government to take necessary action to ensure:

1. Sydney Harbour is cleared and kept clear of redundant, decaying vessels and failing structures.

2. An independent investigation is undertaken to determine whether NSW government agencies properly and fairly responded to community concerns regarding the management of moorings and 'orphaned' assets.

3. An independent environmental and visual impact assessment be properly conducted before permitting vessels to be moored in the bays and coves of Sydney Harbour.

4. The use of the dolphin wharves and moorings in the bays be strictly limited to their original intended and/or approved purpose and not for long-term mooring of vessels.
