Sun sets on Solar My School program

It's Local Government Week (29 July to 4 August) and the perfect opportunity to recognise and celebrate what local councils provide for their communities.

A great example of a successful local government initiative and what can be achieved through collaboration between councils is the Solar My School program, which is heading off into the sunset after seven successful years.

Established by Woollahra, Waverley and Randwick Councils to help schools in the east install solar power on their rooftops, the pioneering program provided specialist technical advice and support for utilising the financial and environmental benefits of clean, locally produced renewable energy.

The program helped nine schools in the Woollahra LGA install solar systems, which are collectively saving 505 tonnes of carbon per year, equivalent to taking 177 cars off the road. The success of the program led to its expansion to 13 other LGAs across NSW and a total of 122 schools installing solar, reducing 6,520 tonnes of carbon emissions per year – a wonderful achievement.

Local not-for-profits, sporting organisations, churches, synagogues and other community entities are now able to receive similar support through our Solar My Suburb program.
