Undertaken by Woollahra Council with funding assistance from the Australian Government’s Investing in Our Communities Program and the NSW Government’s Open Space Program (Places to Play) and Metropolitan Greenspace Program, the upgrade provides a range of imaginative and inclusive recreational experiences for all ages and abilities.

Located at 550 New South Head Road, Rose Bay, the playground is situated within Lyne Park on the Sydney Harbour foreshore and now features an intergenerational activity trail, double flying fox, sensory walkway, water play zone, nature play area for older children, bike track and accessibility elements.

The playground’s centrepiece is a flying boat - a playful nod to the site’s history as the former Rose Bay International Airport - perfect for climbing, piloting and imaginative play.

In recognition and celebration of the traditional custodians of the land, the Gadigal and Birrabirrigal people, engravings of spirit animals of local significance and Dharawal language words of welcome are incorporated into the playground’s concrete footpaths.

Offering an interactive, educational and textural play experience, the engravings by artist Shane Youngberry are a reminder of First Nations People’s connection to country.

Woollahra Mayor Sarah Swan said the upgrade has ensured the playground can better cater to the needs of the local community and visitors.

"I am delighted that Lyne Park is now home to the best new playground in Sydney. The upgrade has ensured it caters to all age groups, with many exciting play and exercise options, making it such a great place for children, parents and grandparents to come and enjoy the outdoors," Mayor Swan said.

"We are grateful for funding from the Australian and NSW Governments, and for the strong interest and participation we received from the community during consultation, as their feedback helped shape these improvements."

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said it's great to see the new equipment honour the history of the area as Sydney’s first international water airport.

"Located on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour, Lyne Park is one of Sydney’s most beloved open spaces for local residents and visitors," Mr Scully said.

"This playground is sure to give lift off to memories that will last a lifetime for many families."

Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and Public Spaces Stephen Bali said the upgraded playground has delivered new equipment that will spark imagination.

"This playground has breathed new life into the park delivering high quality, inclusive space for groups of all ages and abilities with plenty of new attractions including a nature play area, new tables and a flying fox," said Mr Bali said.

"I look forward to seeing the community make the most of this great space."
