This course is subsidised by Woollahra Council Community & Culture Division and is for Woollahra Local Government Area residents only.
Participants will be provided with light refreshments and a Mental Health First Aid Guide.
Mental Health First Aid is the help offered to a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.
Standard Mental Health First Aid is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals. Developed for adults to learn to assist adults. Course participants learn how to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical evidence-based action plan.
The Mental Health First Aid course teaches how to recognise the cluster of symptoms of different illnesses and mental health crises, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person towards appropriate treatments and other support help.
Evaluations consistently show that Mental Health First Aid training improves a participant’s knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. It has been seen shown to decrease stigma and increase help seeking behaviours.
