Renewal of Spirit
About the work
Title: Renewal of Spirit
Artist: Bronwyn Berman
Location: Corner of Bellevue Road and New South Head Road, Double Bay
"Renewal of Spirit represents the reeds and rushes characteristic of the original wetlands environment of the Double Bay area. The sculpture has been carefully crafted from high quality stainless steel, giving the work a jewel like quality that resonate the beauty and style of the local community.
Sitting on the edge of the shopping precinct, the sculpture is intended not only to evoke a memory of the ancient landscape but also to symbolise the rebirth of Double Bay through the current capital works project..."
—Bronwyn Berman
"The dramatic work is bold and brightens a part of Double Bay that needed a lift."
—Councillor Andrew Petrie, Mayor of Woollahra, 2009
About the project
The Double Bay Eastern Gateway Project called for artists around Australia to enter a piece of artwork to landmark the revitilisation of the Double Bay Business Centre.
Artist and former Woollahra resident Bronwyn Berman's concept was unanimously selected by Council's Public Art Advisory Committee for its representation of the original wetlands environment that characterised Double Bay prior to European settlement.
"The work is impressive and will certainly get people talking. Council is supportive of increasing the role of public art in the local community."
—Councillor Andrew Petrie, Mayor of Woollahra, 2009
